Let us know how it works, Patti. Or better yet, post some pictures of it cooking up something....

I finally got around to trying out my new Sun Oven. It's a great feeling knowing that I can cook anything without using electricity.

I made this bread in the afternoon and put it in the oven at around 4:30 this afternoon. Since the sun was at an angle, it took a little longer to bake the bread. Instead of the normal 30 minutes. It took closer to 1 hour. If I would have baked it around 1:00 p.m., it would have taken the normal 30 minutes.

This oven is portable (notice the carry handle). It weighs about 20 pounds.

I see a thermometer at the top (in direct sunlight.) Did you measure the temperature of the oven where the bread was baking? I doubt if it was the 360-400 they claimed, otherwise the bread would not have taken so long.

I don't think bread would be my first choice for an oven like that but braising meats (short ribs, pot roast, veal shank...) should make it highly effective.

The thermometer didn't quite reach 300, but it was 4:30 pm when I started baking the bread.

I'll put it out in full sun tomorrow and see how hot it gets.

Stay posted!

You might try tilting the oven in the direction of the sun with a brick or two in order to get a little bit more direct sun...I'd be curious to see if that made a difference.

Dang, that's pretty cool. I bet we could cook as fast as a microwave here in Arizona in that...

I went back and read the instructions that came with the oven.

There is an adjustable leg allowing you to tilt the oven so there are no shadows inside the oven.

Using the adjustable leg, I set the oven out today at noon. The temperature inside the oven reached 360 degrees in 45 minutes.

BTW, the texture of the bread (using the sun oven) was far superior compared to baking it inside a conventional oven. The conventional oven dries out the bread.

I highly recommend that everybody get one of these. Well worth the price.

I've been asked by the mormon church to give a demonstration of my sun oven.

They are having an Emergency Preparedness Fair and expect a crowd of around 3,000 people. Can you believe that?

Anyway, my mormon friend will have a booth next to mine. He and his wife will demonstrate grinding wheat and making bread from scratch.

I'll demonstrate the solar oven, hand out information on companies that sell them, and give people different ideas for recipes.

This is going to be fun!

That's pretty cool, Patti. Pick their brains and find out what they are thinking....

We had our Emergency Preparedness Fair on Saturday. It was huge! We had an Apache helicopter, Life Flight helicopter, and emergency vehicles in the parking lot. The Fair ran from 9:00 to 4:00. Some of the booths included: FEMA, FBI, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Ham Radios, canning, long term food storage, to name a few.

My sun oven was a big hit.

I really believe this is a "must have" in your preparations for when the SHTF.

I met a guy at the Fair who is a Chief Meteorologist with the Midland Radio Company. He's going to hook me up with a Midland Base Camp Radio (XT511) and some hand-helds.

Score!

Bumper, the head honcho of the Mormon Church was there. I told him that I really appreciated the fact that their church sponsored this Fair. He said this is a "way of life" for them. He said the prophets of the church (years ago) saw a need to prepare and it has become part of their goal: to help others prepare for all types of disasters. They believe that we will have to endure some very rough times prior to the Rapture of the Church. They also believe that the time is eminent.

It just makes sense to have some degree of preparation.
