I bet here in the desert you would burn food in no time. In the summer, as long as there's a hot sidewalk we're in business....

Seriously, though, I bet they would work pretty well as long as the area you are in has adequate daily sunshine. There are also small portable solar hot water heaters that work well in heating water, another necessary item.

You may be right, Bumper. It might not work well in the northwest.

I went ahead and bought one.

I can see the downside of baking bread outside....my neighbors will be able to smell it, and then they're gonna want some.

My new Colt might come in handy!

Let us know how it works out. My wife said she would rather have a wood cook stove for long term needs, but still thinks that might come in handy.....

Patty,

Do you ever watch Living With Ed on the planet green channel I think it is.

He uses all kinds of stuff like this, solar ovens, water barrels to drip irrigate his food he grows in his backyard garden, solar panels on the house.

He is pretty much a flake but there are some good things that can be learned from the show.

Wood cook stoves work as long as you have wood to burn.

What happens when you don't have any more firewood? Or you are physically unable to cut, split or chop the wood?

Also, I'm not sure I'd want to fire up the wood cook stove inside the house when the temperature is 90 degrees and humidity is 100.

The solar oven would be a good back up system.

It also boils water.:image035:

Never heard of it, but I'll check it out.

Thanks for the tip!

I'm in the market for a good solar power system.

As for being a flake: I used to think that preppers were flakes.

And now, I'm a flaky prepper!

Go figure.

Yeah, but Ed Bagley, Jr is a certifiable flake. :yup:

I got my solar oven today!!!

It would be really easy to make one of these.

I went to a volunteer event where the lunch they fed us included hot dogs made in something like that. It took them hours to cook, but they were delicious.

I finally got around to trying out my new Sun Oven. It's a great feeling knowing that I can cook anything without using electricity.

I made this bread in the afternoon and put it in the oven at around 4:30 this afternoon. Since the sun was at an angle, it took a little longer to bake the bread. Instead of the normal 30 minutes. It took closer to 1 hour. If I would have baked it around 1:00 p.m., it would have taken the normal 30 minutes.

This oven is portable (notice the carry handle). It weighs about 20 pounds.

I see a thermometer at the top (in direct sunlight.) Did you measure the temperature of the oven where the bread was baking? I doubt if it was the 360-400 they claimed, otherwise the bread would not have taken so long.

I don't think bread would be my first choice for an oven like that but braising meats (short ribs, pot roast, veal shank...) should make it highly effective.

The thermometer didn't quite reach 300, but it was 4:30 pm when I started baking the bread.

I'll put it out in full sun tomorrow and see how hot it gets.

Stay posted!

You might try tilting the oven in the direction of the sun with a brick or two in order to get a little bit more direct sun...I'd be curious to see if that made a difference.

Dang, that's pretty cool. I bet we could cook as fast as a microwave here in Arizona in that...

I went back and read the instructions that came with the oven.

There is an adjustable leg allowing you to tilt the oven so there are no shadows inside the oven.

Using the adjustable leg, I set the oven out today at noon. The temperature inside the oven reached 360 degrees in 45 minutes.

BTW, the texture of the bread (using the sun oven) was far superior compared to baking it inside a conventional oven. The conventional oven dries out the bread.

I highly recommend that everybody get one of these. Well worth the price.

I've been asked by the mormon church to give a demonstration of my sun oven.

They are having an Emergency Preparedness Fair and expect a crowd of around 3,000 people. Can you believe that?

Anyway, my mormon friend will have a booth next to mine. He and his wife will demonstrate grinding wheat and making bread from scratch.

I'll demonstrate the solar oven, hand out information on companies that sell them, and give people different ideas for recipes.

This is going to be fun!

We had our Emergency Preparedness Fair on Saturday. It was huge! We had an Apache helicopter, Life Flight helicopter, and emergency vehicles in the parking lot. The Fair ran from 9:00 to 4:00. Some of the booths included: FEMA, FBI, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Ham Radios, canning, long term food storage, to name a few.

My sun oven was a big hit.

I really believe this is a "must have" in your preparations for when the SHTF.

I met a guy at the Fair who is a Chief Meteorologist with the Midland Radio Company. He's going to hook me up with a Midland Base Camp Radio (XT511) and some hand-helds.

Score!

Bumper, the head honcho of the Mormon Church was there. I told him that I really appreciated the fact that their church sponsored this Fair. He said this is a "way of life" for them. He said the prophets of the church (years ago) saw a need to prepare and it has become part of their goal: to help others prepare for all types of disasters. They believe that we will have to endure some very rough times prior to the Rapture of the Church. They also believe that the time is eminent.

It just makes sense to have some degree of preparation.
